Here’s a question for you….
Would you say that most of the time you react or you respond?
What’s the difference you might ask?
Well, a reaction is instantaneous, unconscious and usually emotional.
It happens in the moment without much (or any) thought going into the long term consequences.
A response on the other hand is considered.
It is conscious and considers the outcomes and consequences of actions.
So even though it might seem like semantics,
They are definitely not the same, and can have very different results.
Unfortunately the answer for most us is that we react.
We are busy.
We have dozens of balls to juggle and a mile long to-do list.
It is hard to take the time to consider consequences.
So autopilot more often than not kicks in, in the heat of the moment.
And as a result things don’t always go as we might have wanted.
We say things we don’t mean,
Say yes when we mean no.
We let our boundaries, values and possibly even our dreams slide.
We are so caught up in the moment that we forget where it is we are trying to do.
But what we really want to do is to respond.
We want our action to be a true reflection of our choices.
Not a hasty reflex.
Because this is the only way you can start to live in an intentional way.
Moving your life in the direction you want it to go.
But how do you become less reactionary and more responsive?
The trick is to be aware.
Check in with your thoughts and feelings.
Take a breath or two before you act.
Create that space between stimulus and response that will allow you to choose, intentionally.
You will be amazed at the difference it will make in your life.
How much calmer you will feel.
How your relationships will improve,
How your life will begin to unfold in the ways you want it to.
Why not take the time this week to try it out?
Let me know how you get on.
Have a wonderful week.
