You can let go of the ‘busy’ and still succeed

For some reason, being busy makes us feel important.

Like we are doing something, going somewhere.

It is a cultural badge of honour that so many of us proudly wear.

But the funny thing is, few of us actually like being busy.

No-one ever said to themselves

“when I grow up I want to be – busy!”

Yet here we all are, striving to be oh so busy every single day.

Our time taken up with tasks, chores, to-do’s and obligations.

Running around getting stuff done.

And on one level this can feel good – efficient, productive and proactive.

Yet when you pause to think about it, it is not that much fun.

And actually causes quite a lot of stress and overwhelm.

But we think we need to do it in order to succeed.

Imagine a world where you are able to be successful yet NOT be insanely busy.

A world where you have time to do the things that are important to you.

Where your day is full and engaging, but not manic.

What would you be doing in that world?

Working on your business, spending time with family, getting fit and healthy, giving time to a good cause, relaxing, having a holiday, learning a new skill.

What would it be? Can you picture it?

This world is possible.

The reality is that you can do the things you want without the crazy ‘busy’

You can succeed without always being on overdrive,

But you need to give yourself permission to let some things go.

Busyness comes from doing things that seem ‘urgent’ but aren’t necessarily important.

Saying ‘yes’ when you really mean ‘NO’.

Taking on tasks because you feel you ‘should’

Perfecting, procrastinating, prevaricating.

It feels useful and productive,

But usually it isn’t actually helpful.

So how to get less ‘busy’ and more focused instead?

Be true to your priorities and values.

Get good at making swift decisions

And don’t second guess yourself.

Don’t commit yourself to things you don’t want to do.

Learn to say ‘NO’

Focus your energy on the tasks that make a difference to you.

Then let the other stuff go

And for sure don’t sweat the small stuff.

Why not see if you can recalibrate and let a bit of the ‘busy’ go this week.
