What did you do well today?

We humans are so negative sometimes.

(actually, a lot of the time!).

In part, it is because we are wired that way.

In evolutionary terms it makes sense to pay particular attention to things that may harm you.

It’s much more useful to notice a snake on your path than a spray of daisies, right?

However this tendency to look for the negative has spilt over into our modern everyday (and obviously far less hazardous) lives.

We notice when things are dirty, but not when they are clean.

We notice noise, but often fail to tune into silence.

We notice mistakes but are slow to acknowledge when things go as planned.

What do you think all this negative focus is doing to the way you feel and interact with the world?

But even worse, almost, is that we also have a negative bias towards ourself,

Through our internal self talk.

We rarely take a moment to recognise our successes and feel good about what we have done,

But boy, do we give ourselves a talking to about all the ways we don’t measure up.

The actions we missed on our to-do list.

That silly thing we probably shouldn’t have said.

The workout we missed, or the doughnut we ate.

Each day we have a litany of complaints against ourselves that can stack up pretty quickly.

And how does that leave you feeling?

What about the flip side?

When was the last time you gave yourself credit for the things you got right?

Sure you may have missed five things on your to-do list, but you did ten of them!

Yes the car may be a little messy, but you got everyone to school on time.

You didn’t sweep up the grass clippings, bu you mowed the lawn.

OK, your shirt is crumpled, but you nailed that sales presentation.

Did you pat yourself on the back for these?

Most likely not.

We have so many ways of saying “I did a bad job”,

And far too few to say “I did a good job!”

This is something we should change.

Of course every day is filled with both successful and unsuccessful moments.

But we tend to only focus on one side of the coin.

So why not embrace the small victories, and turn the negative tape off for a while?

Imagine the shift in mood and enthusiasm and energy this would bring.

Celebrate your wins, no matter how tiny.

It will completely change the way you feel.

Are you looking to get back on track?
