It is easy to be in the moment and accept all that life has to throw at you,
When things are going well,
When everything is going your way.
Of course it is a completely different ball game when things don’t go your way.
Even the most minor setbacks can throw all your usual feelings of equanimity out the window.
Which I was starkly reminded of just this week when I had just a teeny, tiny setback.
I strained a muscle in my hamstring (an unfortunate combo of stretching in yoga and running uphills)
And was told I need to stay off it for three days and then go easy on the running for a while.
Three days, I know, nothing, it should be a snap.
But I really hate being benched.
And immediately my brain jumped to thoughts like
“But I want to go for a run”
“I don’t want to be sitting here on this sofa”
“I don’t like this”
“This shouldn’t have happened”
Ridiculous I know, it is only 72 hours,
But this is what our brains do.
They love to create drama.
With the consequence that we often make things much worse for ourselves than they really are.
We like things as we like them, and that is OK
But unfortunately the truth of life is that often they won’t be.
So when these upsets happen,
It is a good idea to take a breath, give yourself a bit of a talking to,
And use the opportunity to get better at accepting things as they are.
(clearly still very much a work in progress for me!)
We could all do to develop what yogis would call santosha;
The ability to be content with present circumstances, as challenging and infuriating as they may be.
Not easy at times, for sure, but so worth it.
Because how much more sense does it make to focus your time and energy on dealing with and making the most of, the world as it is,
Rather than using it to get frustrated about how world should be?
