I was out in the backyard yesterday watching my son shoot hoops.
Over and over and over again.
He’s pretty good.
Getting shots in from further than I could even throw them.
(though of course that is not saying much, I set the basketball bar pretty low!)
It always amazes me how you can train your body to do pretty much anything.
Practice something enough and the muscle memory starts to kick in
And you become proficient, even great, without having to try.
Your body just knows what to do – it becomes automatic.
Have you ever thought that the exact same principle works for your mind?
Just as muscles get stronger with increased use, the more you use certain areas of your brain the stronger the neural connections get.
Until they become almost automatic.
And this works for thoughts too.
When you think the same thought, or tell yourself the same story over and over again.
You develop a neural superhighway.
The thought becomes a belief and becomes so ingrained that it feels like an indisputable fact – it feels true.
But you know what, no thought is a fact – they are all your own stories.
Stories that you, perhaps, let limit you and what you are capable of.
So why not train your mind to think the kind of thoughts that are going to serve you?
Let go of limiting beliefs and train yourself to be open for anything.
Why think “I am never going to be able to do this”
When you could think “ maybe this is possible after all”?
Why think that “I never get anywhere on time”
When you could think “I am going to be a punctual person from now on”?
Why think “That I don’t have what it takes”
When you could think “I can learn this if I try”?
If your thoughts aren’t working for you,
If they aren’t helping you to create the life you want.
Why not start training yourself to think some new ones.
Put down the old ones, and start lifting the new.
At first this will seem awkward, ingrained beliefs are hard to let go of,
But if you correct yourself enough times and keep thinking the new thoughts you will develop new automatic superhighways in your brain.
Ones that will take you exactly where you want to go.
