How about starting the day with a little Kenny Rogers wisdom ?….

(and sorry in advance if you get this song stuck in your head)

“ You got to know when to hold ’em, know when to fold ‘em “

You couldn’t have said it better, Kenny.

Yes, a song about gambling, but so relevant for life in general, right?

Knowing when to give in or when to go on.

So important.

Now of course there is no point in banging your head against a brick wall.

There are times when it is best to let go and give up but ….

Unfortunately, most of us have the tendency to “fold em” far too often.

Trying new things, making changes, working towards goals,

Is all hard work.

It requires effort and energy expenditure

It creates uncertainty and

Opens us up to the possibility of mistakes, trip ups and the big F

And no-one likes that.

It’s uncomfortable and scary.

And our brains, have been hard wired to keep us away from all that.

Our brain’s job is to try to keep us safe and comfortable.

(makes sense in evolutionary terms, right?)

Our brains don’t like us trying new things….. new things could be ‘dangerous’

New things could get us ‘hurt’.

So our brain makes excuses to keep us safely in our comfort zone.

As such we have all become masters of justification and rationalisation.

“I just don’t have the time”

“It’s too complicated”

“I don’t really like it that much anyway”

“This isn’t as much fun as I thought it would be”

“This isn’t the right time for me”

“I can’t do it”

“This isn’t for me”

These all sound like perfectly reasonable excuses right?

They sound like perfectly sensible reasons to quit.

But are they?

Or are they your brain just trying to prod you back into safety?

Are they a cop out, keeping you from your goals and dreams?

Sometimes you need to override the instinctual urge to stay safe,

Get comfortable with being uncomfortable.

And get out there and blaze a new trail.
