Have you read Liane Moriarty’s book “What Alice Forgot”?
(I just finished it. It’s a fun read, great for a holiday)
If you haven’t, let me catch you up on the premise……..
39 year old Alice falls over in a step class,
Hits her head -hard.
And wakes up believing she is her “29 year old” self.
10 years of memories gone, POOOOF just like that.
She doesn’t even remember that she has three children! or anything at all about her current life.
All memories – gone.
Can you imagine?
Now it gets even more interesting.
Because Alice has no recollection of any of the events that have shaped her life over the past 10 years
– she wakes up with the personality and psychology of her younger, 29 year old self.
Alice is surprised, confused and somewhat horrified to uncover the person that she has apparently become.
and so the story unfolds…
It got me thinking, how would this scenario play out if it happened to me?
How has the passage of time changed me and the way that I think, feel and act?
What have I gained and what have I lost?
Would young me even like present-day me?
Have I turned out the way that I might have hoped?
Lots of food for thought, right?
Think about it for a minute.
Our personalities are not set in stone.
Though I think sometimes we do take it for granted that we are, who we are
– that same person that we have always been
– that same person that we always will be.
But if you think about it, that is clearly not the case.
Everything we do, every decision we make, every person we come into contact with,
Changes us in some small way.
Sometimes for the better, sometimes not.
Over time, the way we live our lives directly affects the person that we become.
Our life experiences and our choices create who we are.
So, when was the last time you had a really good look in the mirror at the person that you are today?
How do you think you would view your life now, through the eyes of your younger self,
If you had an “Alice moment”?
Would you like what you see?
Would you like who you have become?
As I said…. a lot of food for thought.
