Making the days count

I don’t know why I was thinking about this earlier this week but….

I did the maths and figured out that I have lived for 16,090 days —

which means all going well I have around another 16000 to live.

This sounds like quite a lot

But those days do seem to be passing by alarmingly quickly.

And a lot of them are a bit of a blur to be honest.

Then I got to thinking,

How many of my last 16,090 days do I actually remember?

Not just small incidences or general memories or images from photographs, but actual days

And then it hit me ….

Not that many.

Maybe, — if I sat down and wrote a list I could remember 100 days, perhaps 200 but I think that would be a stretch.

Only a 100 or so out of 16,000!!

(I’m thinking right now, maybe keeping a journal or diary is a pretty good idea)

I remember a lot of the firsts – school, college, wedding, births, moving house or country.

I also remember achievements – when I ran a new big race, graduated from school, got first job.

But there are also a handful of magical days I remember, days I spent having fun, in nature,

days spent in the company of family and friends.

These are the days that count.

For my next 16,000 days I want MORE of these.

I want days that stand out – days that I have enjoyed, connected, loved and learned.

I want to remember more than 100 of them.

To do this I know I need to check in again with my values and figure out what really matters to me.

And then spend as much time as possible doing those things.

I need to remind myself to be more present and aware in the moment.

I need to enjoy and even just NOTICE what I am doing right now.

And I think I need to get myself a journal.

How about you? How many days in your life can you remember?
