My two boys are always ravenous when they get home from school, so I always like to have something for them when they come in the door, before they rush to the snack cupboard and grab themselves something perhaps not so healthy.

This banana bread fits the bill – healthy enough that I am happy – sweet enough that my boys gobble it down.

So without further ado – here is my plant based banana bread for you

  • 200 g whole wheat cake flour
  • 90 g sugar
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • pinch salt
  • 3 bananas (very ripe)
  • 80 ml apple juice
  • 45 ml grapeseed oil (or canola)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 50g dark choc chips
  • 50g chopped walnuts


  • Preheat the oven to 180 degrees C
  • Prepare a 20cm square cake tin
  • Combine flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl
  • In a blender or food processor combine the bananas, apple juice, oil and vanilla
  • Add the wet ingredient to the dry ingredients
  • Fold in the chocolate chips and the walnuts
  • Pour the batter into the cake tin and place in the heated oven
  • Bake for approximately 50 minutes
  • Leave to cool for at least 15 minutes before turning out of the tin
